1. The women’s triathlon at the Olympics will take place on Monday August 18th at 10am local Beijing time (UTC/GMT +8 hours). The men’s competition will be staged the next day on Tuesday August 19th at the same time. North American triathlon fans will be able to enjoy the Olympic races in primetime (7pm Eastern Standard Time and 10pm Pacific Standard Time) while fans in Asia, Australia and New Zealand can tune in during the early afternoon to catch the triathlons.

2. The ITU official Olympic website is www.triathlon.org/olympics

3. From the ITU: Olympic draw for triathlon start positions - The process was separate for both the women's and men's fields. The number 13 was not assigned so number 56 is the final start number.

In the women's draw, Italy was the first country pulled which means Charlotte Bonin will wear the number one start number. Germany was pulled second, followed by Switzerland. Defending Olympic gold medalist Kate Allen will wear #11 as Austria was the fifth country pulled. New Zealand’s was the tenth country drawn as Andrea Hewitt, Debbie Tanner and Sam Warriner will wear numbers 25, 26, and 27 respectively. The reigning world champion going into Beijing Helen Tucker will suit up with number 31 as Great Britain was the 13th country drawn. Immediately after Australia was pulled, meaning Erin Densham, Emma Moffatt and Emma Snowsill will wear numbers 32, 33, and 34 respectively. The Americans Laura Bennett, Julie Ertel and Sarah Haskins will occupy numbers 40, 41, and 42. Portugal was among the final countries drawn so Vanessa Fernandes will wear number 54.

For the men, South Africa was drawn first, which gives Hendrik De Villiers the number one start number. Then the Netherlands’ Sander Berk will wear number two as the second country drawn. Australia was the eighth country pulled meaning Courtney Atkinson and Brad Kahlefeldt will wear numbers 11 and 12 respectively. The Aussie pair will be close to the Canadian team that was drawn next with 2000 Olympic gold medalist Simon Whitfield assigned number 16. The U.S. was the 13th country randomly selected as the country’s representatives in Beijing, Hunter Kemper, Matt Reed and Jarrod Shoemaker will occupy numbers 21 to 23. New Zealand was the 15th country drawn as Bevan Docherty, Kris Gemmell and Shane Reed will wear numbers 27, 28 and 29 respectively. Newly crowned world champion Javier Gomez will suit up in his first Olympics wearing number 30. A trio of big countries followed after Spain, including Germany, Great Britain and France.

3. The International Triathlon Union have confirmed that the Age Group Sprint Distance World Championships have been included to the 2009 Gold Coast ITU Triathlon World Championships - September 9-13, 2009 program. The Local Organizing Committee welcomed the Sprint event to an already impressive line-up that includes elite, under23, junior, age-group Olympic distance, athletes with a disability (AWAD), Corporate and Aquathlon.

4. The 2009 Gold Coast ITU Triathlon World Championships are expected to attract more than 3,000 athletes from close to 60 countries. It will be the fourth time Australia will host the world championships and the first time since Perth successfully hosted in 2000.

5. Darwin Tri Club pro athlete Ali Fitch is recovering from injury following a very painful fall in IM Lake Placid. Ali has just secured a new bike sponsor - Max Lelli. Great news for Ali.

6. A number of members have been out of action for awhile with colds & flu and now a gastro bug is making an appearance. Hope those concerned recover quickly.

7. Reminder about Ride2work October 15: You can register at www.ride2work.com.au There are prizes to be won (like Trek bikes). Your registration will also help Bicycling NT collect data that will assist them when communicating with key decision makers for better facilities and infrastructure for bike riders. Bicycling NT says Ride2Work day is as close as we get to a critical mass ride in the NT, and therefore shows that we exist, so they encourage you sign up and go along to one of the breakfasts they are organising near you. See their website (www.bicyclent.org.au) for updates on these breakfasts as they become confirmed. They give a warning: riding to work could become a habit!

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you take your tape measure along when shopping for a car - just to make sure the bike box will fit inside
... your kids want to visit & they ask if you are racing on a certain weekend before they book flights
... you find a pair of goggles that fit, so buy another three pairs to have in reserve

Safe training,
Cheers
Robyn
