Robyn's E News 15 Sept 08

Hi All,

Race 1 of the K9 Cycles Women's & Sprint Series was held at Lake Alexander yesterday. Many thanks to Brian Gallagher (RD for the day) and those volunteers who assisted with the running of the event. Close to 60 participants competed over both distances which was a great turnout. The time shift for the series will also help those athletes targetting events such as Noosa and/or the early selection events for Worlds.

On Friday night the presentation dinner bought out some interesting characters - Kenny the Plumber was there, so to Lara Croft, Brian, James Dean, a couple of Gladiators, a couple of Bollywood stars and an assortment of other colourful characters. Thanks to Belinda Townend & co for arranging the night.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Bicycle NT ’s annual general meeting (AGM) is on Sunday 12 October 2008, 9.00 am sharp to 10.30 am, at the Nightcliff Electorate Meeting Room, Shop 5, Pavonia Way, Nightcliff (ie Jane Aagard’s office, where the Sunday Nightcliff markets are held).

2. Earlier this month the International Triathlon Union (ITU) announced it has imposed a two-year ban on Dmitriy Gaag (former world champ), a triathlete from Kazakhstan, after committing an anti-doping rule violation in an out-of-competition doping control test in Des Moines, United States on June 20, 2008.

The ban begins June 20, 2008 and prohibits Gaag from entering or participating in any competition or activity authorized by ITU, its National Federations (NFs) and/or any other signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code.

Gaag's anti-doping rule violation was a result of an adverse analytical finding of recombinant erythropoietin (EPO), a substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.

3. There were some interesting characters at our Annual Presentation Night dinner on Friday. The paparazzi took a lot of photos (they are currently under review & the best will be kept for blackmailing purposes lol) and photos will be posted to flickr sometime soon.

4. The second National Ride to Work Day is happening again on Wednesday 15 October. Free community breakfasts are taking place around the NT. In Darwin, free coffee and Bakers Delights yummies will be served at the Roma Bar for registered participants from 7.00 to 8.30.
If you would like to participate this year, go to the ride to work website at www.ride2work.com.au . Check out the “community breakfasts around Australia” tab on the website to find out about the breakfasts that are taking place in the NT. Last year, about 400 people in the NT registered and participated in the ride, and organisers want more to participate this year.

5. For the latest info on all the races in Kununurra and top end Western Australia log on to Triathlon Kimberley.
http://sites.google.com/site/kimberleytriathlon/

6. Ian Norton & Nikki Roddie made it back from Ireland in time for the presentation night. At the Lost Sheep Triathlon Ian was 9th overall and Nikki 9th female in this extremely difficult race. This is a very popular event with a limited field and they had to be on the ball to secure entry which sells out almost as soon as it opens.

7. Thanks to those supporters who yesterday helped clear up sections of glass on the bike turnaround. Much appreciated by competitors.

8. Triathlon becoming the sport of choice for celebrities - latest Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey at Malibu Triathlon.

2. Our 2007/2008 age group triathletes of the year pointscore winners will be revealed this evening. Who will win our Dag of the Year award? And which crash was good enough to take out the Broken Spoke award? These and a host of other presentations will all be made.

3. Haven't got your tickets yet? Limited numbers are available. Please call John on 0423 797 401 today to reserve your ticket. Do it now !!

FOR SALE / WANTED ETC:

1. Items for this section by Sunday 5pm please

OTHER NEWS:

1. Athletics NT has launched the 10km Road NT Championships Race for Sunday morning (21 September 2008), starting at 7:00am. The event will be held at East Point in Darwin, starting and finishing at the Lake Alexander carpark. The course will consist of two 5km loops on an out and back course towards the Gun Turrets. Cost $15:00.

2. Triathlon is on again this weekend in Kununurra.

3. Rob Brooks was unlucky in Singapore. A competitor in front of him lost control of his bike on a tight corner and took Rob with him as he went down. Classic case of no where for Rob to go. He hurt his shoulder and elbow but wasted no time in shaking himself off, getting back on the bike and getting on with it. His 8th place in his age group makes you wonder what could have been except for that misfortune.

4. Rob not the only one to go down. Luke McKenzie also inspected the Singapore bitumen far closer than he would have liked.

5. Simon Thompson had a spell in the medical tent at the end of the race. Thommo took it by the barest of margins - 15 secs - from Terenzo

6. Our own Ali Fitch backed up her 2nd in Ironman Canada a few weeks ago with another podium finish in Singapore 70.3, beating Belinda Granger in the process.

7. New Zealand's Gina Ferguson (2nd in Singapore) had a day in Darwin on the way over and a few days here on the way back.

8. And still on pros, Chris McCormack was back in an unusual 6th at Monaco 70.3, no doubt a hit out for his Hawaii preparations.

9. Ironman 70.3 Singapore date will be earlier next year to move away from a number of major events including the night grand prix. Pencil in 22 March 09 if the event is on your to do list.

10. Looking for a holiday with a purpose? You may be interested in the Nepal Altitude Training Camp (billed as the perfect pre-season preparation). Its seven full days of trekking from 31 Dec 08 to 10 Jan 08. Further information www.tribob.com

Hi All,

There was a great roll up at the Surf Club yesterday. Race Director Craig Garland and a merry band of volunteers set up a course that everyone enjoyed immensely. A huge vote of thanks to all involved. Heard there was a bit of accidental biffo in the swim, some early season form demonstrated on the bike and some gasping heard on the run.

Welcome to all our new members who raced with the club for the first time & also to those who have returned to the fold. We hope you were inspired to look at the calendar for the first date you can next do it all again. Speaking of calendars, the yellow printed calendar is the version we are using now.
