Robyn's E News 16 Dec 09

Hi All,

This will be the last E News for 2009 so I'd like to take the opportunity to wish all readers a very happy Christmas and all the best for the new year where ever you may be.

I've enjoyed bringing you the mixed bag of tri news and info. that is the e news. My apologies for the odd typo, some of you have occasionally appeared faster than normal, others (though not too often I hope) have had some time added due to the odd slip of a finger (or non wearing of glasses) !

Darwin Triathlon Club is fortunate that our members have such positive experiences here that they often enjoy receiving the E News when they move. Thanks to those of you now living interstate and overseas who check in regularly. Thanks also to our members who point me in the right direction, particularly those who let me know events to watch for.

E News will be back in your inbox early January.

Committee members are Tony Knott, Alison Foster and James Tudor. The future of the club looks bright. A huge vote of thanks was extended to outgoing treasurer Melissa Roberts who has kept the club ticking over for years & handed the books over with the club in a sound financial.

3. Many of you will know cyclist Al Brockman. He has been a keen cyclist for many years and was part of the Darwin Cycling Club for around 5 years. Recently Al was deliberately run down by a motorist in Exmouth WA and he is intensive care and will be for many months.

Robyn's E News 14 Dec 09

Hi All,

What a soggy, soggy weekend ! But how nice not to be hot & sweaty for a change. Hope you haven't suffered much too much damage. Some have had trees come down, potplants smashed and there are a few ceilings leaking. Lake Alexander is full, as is the Waterfront Lagoon. The wavepool is closed due to the new "pool" which has appeared down there on the walkways. Rapid Creek now Rapid River, and it's still raining!

It's that time of year again when we all head in different directions so Wednesday's E News will be the last until early January (unless there is something really, really exciting or important to tell you). If you have news, items for sale or wanted, or announcements please have them to me by 8pm tomorrow for inclusion.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Congratulations to Grant Preddy and Michelle Gailey who were up against the likes of Jason Shortis and Bec Keat in Canberra yesterday. It's a credit to both that they were able to compete at that level, who knows what the future will bring now they have made that momentous first step up.

2. Angelika Hannon was also in action in Canberra yesterday doing her first ever half ironman.

3. Canberra Half is over a tough course and conditions were very hot (and dry)! Spare a thought though for Vincent Gilly who would much rather have been in the field than watching on from the sidelines. Vincent is recovering well from his injuries.

4. Ali Croser has been kicking back in Adelaide following IM WA and is feeling great.

5. No rest for Stu Fitch who has just done 3000kms in three days ... in a car that is !

6. Simon Wiese is going to bring his potplants in a little earlier next non cyclone we have.

7. Kathy & Duncan Poulson's neighbours left a note on their door demanding they stop the beeping noise, especially at night. Their reply "Ah, life in the tropics, ain't it grand. The 'beeping' noise you can hear is called croaking. It comes from frogs." This one made Bushranger in the NT News yesterday.

8. Paul Bell knows when to leave town. He headed off early on Saturday so his memories of Darwin will be hot and muggy.

9. Katherine Multi Sport calendar just released has Ultra Challenge on Sunday of the long weekend - 13 June 2010.

10. Photos from Xmas Splash N Dash are up on Flickr.

11. "Op 20 december staan er 4500 gelukkige hardlopers aan de start van de Bruggenloop Rotterdam." Ron Griep will be one of the 4500 "gelukkige hardlopers" in the Rotterdam Bridge Run (15kms).

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... the windtrainer got a workout over the weekend
... you were dressed and ready to run & had one eye on the BOM radar watching for a break.
... you took the opportunity to do zip, zilch, zero !!

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn

CLUB TRIATHLETE OF YEAR POINTSCORE:

1. We are midway through our season so I've attached the Triathlete of the Year Pointscore up to Dec. Some age groups are very close, in others there appear to be runaway leaders. My experience is that things change in the new year: members come and go and with more triathlons happening in the second part of the season, there can be, and usually is, huge turnarounds in the pointscore.

2. Please advise any omissions, errors or pointscore queries to darwintriclub@bigpond.com

3. You must be a current member to receive points and no retrospective points are awarded.

4. July is a period of grace, members retain points earned provided they have rejoined by 31 July. If not, those points are deleted.

5. Voluntary race director and (2) rostered timekeepers or their replacements receive 6 points.

6. Pointscore updates are posted regularly to the club website.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Triathlon focus shifts to the national capital this weekend with the running of the Canberra Half Ironman. Good luck to our members racing there including Grant Preddy, Michelle Gailey and Angelika Hannon.

2. NT News results got creative today with IM WA results I sent in. Patrick Vernay's 8.14.00 has been listed as 8 mins 14 secs ! He is fast but ....

3. Damien Brown & Liz Grylls enjoyed the Singapore Marathon, cruising through in 4.45.32

4. Local runner Hayley Barber took 3rd in the Singapore Half Marathon in 1.30.39

5. Date claimer: Norfolk Island International Triathlon 17/18 April 2010. Tour info at www.fit4travel.com.au

6. Also at the same website you will find details of 3/9 Sept 2010 Cook Islands Round Rarotonga Road Race - a week of running events in an idyllic location.

7. Winner of the $50 NT Elite Cycles voucher at the junior splash n dash was Patrick Chin. Congratulations to Patrick and thanks again to NT Elite Cycles at Palmerston for providing this lucky draw at each of the junior events.

8. A timely warning to lock your bikes away securely. Nick Coutts had his Cervelo P3C stolen out of the back shed at the place he lives in at Rapid Creek. Nick would appreciate if everyone could keep an eye out for it as they are riding around.

9. More and more travelling triathletes are being hit with excess baggage charges when flying with a bike. Those who then get jammed into a seat beside someone who "overflows", wish it were the combined weight of passenger and luggage with counted.

10. Racing away over Dec/Jan? It will help E News production if I know who I'm looking for in results. Don't be shy !

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you are anxiously watching for entries to open for an event that is still a year away
... you feel cheated when moisture gets into your Gatorade powder & the container is only half empty
... you are watching the current airline sales with interest to see if offers coincide with race dates

Train safe,
Cheers,
Robyn

Robyn's E News 7 Dec 09

Hi All,

The Christmas Splash N Dash was a real buzz with plenty of Santa hats, reindeer ears and tinsel on display. We had some creative interpretations of the beach run, a few tight squeezes in the swim and a dog loose amongst the runners but it all combined to make for a fantastic evening of fun on the foreshore.

A huge thank you to Race Director Rob Weatherald who ensured things ran smoothly. Thanks also to Kylie who watched over the junior event. As predicted the traditional junior/senior relay was a blast and left the adults gasping for air. Those youngsters really give their all and inspired the adults to better things. A few of the parents were surprised by the run speed of the kids !

Thanks to all those who assisted to make our final event for 2009 such a success.

David Johnson's bike split set the standards, Jade Pass & Jess Fuller swam the socks of everyone else and Tim Fitzpatrick blitzed the run. Junior Mitch Scott came in at 7th overall in the individual event. Great to see Loie Sharp & Rob Manning flying the flag for the vets.

2. News in that pro triathletes Bec Keat and our own Ali Fitch have had to pull the plug on IM WA this weekend.

3. Matt Yates from Alice Springs is doing his first Ironman at IM WA. Good luck to Matt ... make a note to add him to those on your athlete tracker list !

4. Nic Hahn has checked in from Sri Lanka recently where she is currently working. Compared to her life in Swaziland, she is finding it very civilised. Steve Denton is still in Bantam, Indonesia and vowing to get back into tri next year. Rowie Eastick is Thailand based and manages to get around to a lot of the Asian triathlons and multisport events. Jerome Bosmans should get cracking with a training program as we expect him to visit and turn up at a race around mid year.

5. Paul Bell is confirmed on start list for Roth next year.

6. ITU World Champion Alistair Brownlee has put his killer run ability on display again & gained selection for the U23 UK team for the European Cross Country Championships coming up in Dublin 13/12/09.

7. For selection event details for 2010 ITU World Championship events (SD, OD & LD) refer www.triathlon.org.au

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you get all excited on hearing of a triathlon taking place somewhere you always wanted to visit
... you are looking forward to a rest week between Christmas and New Year (and take it)
... you realise more is not necessarily better

See you Saturday,

Fannie Bay Christmas Bash

Hi All,

It was a busy weekend for triathletes and we are finding that checking the BOM is now a must before heading out (for training or social reasons).

Our Christmas function at Lake Alexander on Saturday was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed. The late arvo black clouds gave some cause for concern but the storm rattled through and cleared in plenty of time. The sunset over Fannie Bay provided a spectacular backdrop and it was great to kick back and relax in such a beautiful location. Thanks to Kylie Sheffield, Nerida Godfrey and Jane Marie Kerslake for their efforts in organising the catering - the cheesecake & ice-cream was voted 10/10 by adults and kids alike.

The juniors had an aquathlon at the Ski Club yesterday morning. I love watching the kids, they are so enthusiastic ! NT Elite Cycles (Shop 6, 130 University Ave, Durack) are proud sponsors of the junior 09/10 series. Winner of the $50 NT Elite Cycles voucher lucky draw yesterday was Jake Van Dam. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers at this event.

OTHER NEWS:

1. The closing date for entry to the Crowne Plaza Canberra City Half Ironman has been extended to November 29th, with late entry through to December 3rd if entry does not fill in the meantime. Last Friday, Triathlon Australia requested to use the event as a qualifying event to the Australian Team to the 2010 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships – next July in Immenstadt, Germany.
This will be the first time this race has been a qualifying event for a world champs team, even though the current course is based entirely on the first ever Long Distance World Championships in Australia, held back in 2006. (For further information on the qualifying procedures see www.triathlon.org.au).

2. The Flickr page is almost 2 years old and now boasts nearly 4,000 images. Would you believe the views are approaching 33,000 !!!

3. Feedback required please. I'm wondering if you all see tri items appearing from time to time in the NT News?? Would you like me to scan and add to the E News?

4. If you are travelling and need a race belt, please contact me as I have some Scody racebelts still available for members.

5. Rowie Eastick has a ton of fun racing in various formats all around Asia. She did an Adventure Race last weekend which was part of the Thailand Amazing Adventure series. These are challenging races - consisting of MTB, X-country running, kayak and swimming - you have to race in pairs (and stay within 100m of each other), and you do not know the order of the legs, or the distance each one is. There are 2 categories; Adventure (Easy) and Extreme (not so easy!), so you are told, for example, that the total distance of the bike for the Adv may be 50km, and for the Extreme may be 70km; but there could be 1, 2 or 3 legs, so when u start at your transition, you don't know how far you're going, or what the next leg will be, or even if its the last leg! You generally don't know you're close to the finish until you see the finish flag! Interesting exercise in pacing, nutrition, fluid rationing, and mental flexibilty! And sometimes, you have obstacles like cargo nets, swimming with car tube etc! Very well run series, with usually about 100 teams competing (across all categories). The one Rowie did on wkend was just outside of Bangkok, and she and her team mate came 1st in the Adv Category Women's (easy!)

See you all on Saturday in your Christmas finery,
Cheers,
Robyn

Hi All,

Ready for Friday evening's Splash N Dash? It's going to be a real challenge for some of us (as in me) to get through the 300/2 x 3 format, so please don't eat all the watermelon before I finish.

I hear some teaming up is also happening and it will be interesting to see those combinations. Will teams have just one swimmer and one runner or will they go with the 3 person approach and each do 300/2 ??

There is plenty of scope to form teams on the day at rego so come on down if you are still to match up and we will assist. The other option is to just complete as much as you can on your own.

So no excuses, we look forward to seeing you all down at the Lake !

OTHER NEWS:

1. Rod Gregg will be lining up for his 10th Ironman at IM WA in a few weeks. It's taken him awhile to get around to doing this milestone event, but we always knew with passion like his, it would happen some day.

2. Ironman 70.3 World Championships take place in Clearwater this weekend. Follow the action via athlete tracker at www.ironman.com

3. Australian cyclist and former Paris-Roubaix champion Stuart O’Grady was taken to a Spanish hospital after he collapsed following a lap on the Valencia MotoGP race course on the back of a motorcycle piloted by 2007 MotoGP champion Casey Stoner.

4. The New York City Marathon on 1 Nov 09 was the largest marathon field in the sport's history - 43,741 runners and 43,475 finishers (a 99.4% completion rate).

5. Erica Reeve was among those who did Canberra's Tour de femme last weekend. She had a seeded position to start, got swept up in the front pack and pushed super hard to hold them. Unfortunately she lost the bunch with 1km to go and came in 23 seconds behind the winner. But 25th out of 600 ain't bad! They kept an average speed of 40km on a semi-hilly course! Erica was recently in Darwin for a quick visit.

6. Entry to 2010 Mooloolaba Triathlon opens Monday 16th November.

7. Here's an ever recurring dinner table discussion point: After some recent high profile DQs in IM events (including Kona) there is a call for the female pros to be given a 30 min start on the field so they don't get mixed up with the age group men (who apparently cause all the problems .. put that's a whole different discussion !!!). I take an alternate view and would love to go back to the good old days of mass starts and "may the best man/woman win". Either that or make the draft penalty 20 - 30 mins in the box at IM events, which would pretty much mean your race is over if you get caught drafting and may discourage pros & age groupers alike from committing the dastardly deed in the first place.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you know what T1 and T2 means
... you have elastic laces in at least one pair of shoes
... you find yourself using cycling signals when out for a group run.

Train safe,
Cheers,
Robyn

Hi All,

An enthusiastic crowd of competitors, volunteers and spectators were on hand to enjoy the inaugural Splash N Dash event at the Waterfront Recreational Lagoon on Friday evening.

A huge thank you to RD Lisa Quinell, especially as setting up a brand new event requires a larger than normal input of time, thought and energy. Lisa was assisted by a fantastic group of volunteers and we are indeed fortunate that our tradition of volunteering is alive and well. All competitors appreciate and thank them for their efforts.

1. Disappointment for Heath Porter who has had to pull out of IM WA with a fractured scapula.

2. Bicycle NT ’s annual general meeting (AGM) will be held on Sunday 6th December 2009, at 10.30 am at the Nightcliff Electorate Meeting Room, Shop 5, Pavonia Way, Nightcliff (ie Jane Aagard’s office, where the Sunday Nightcliff markets are held). All interested people welcome.

5. Thinking about a new bike or go faster gear for yourself, partner or kids for Christmas? Now is the time to get into CycleZone, K9 Cycles or NT Elite Cycles ... they are stocked up now but leave it much longer to order and you may be disappointed that they are unable to get what you want up in tme for Santa to wrap.

6. Vicki Woodrow enjoyed her recent visit to Darwin & packed a mini "training camp" in between family commitments. She mentioned that we don't appreciate enough just how good the club is until you no longer have access to it's friendly, action packed calendar and training opportunities. Unfortunately Vicki has gone back to NSW to face yet another lot of flood damage.

7. The 20th annual Tour de Femme cycle race was held in Canberra over the weekend. Over 700 females of all ages and abilities took part. I was lucky enough to take part in the a few of the very early Tour de Femme events and it was a fantastic experience. Hey, maybe we need to adopt the concept here in Darwin !

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

...you are racing away & meet a fellow competitor for the first time & they can tell you what events you have done and what time you did them in (and you can reciprocate)

... you still don't know the last name or occupation of some of your training mates, but you do know what events they are targeting and how much their average times have improved.

...you realise you don't have enough annual leave to cover the races you want to do this season

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn

Hi All,

I wonder how many of you, like me, completely forgot the Melbourne Cup? No sweep, no bets & wondered why the shop assistant was telling me to shush (the Cup was being run and they were listening to the background radio) when I was getting lunch ?? Well ... it was a busy day at work !!

For those of you who have not yet renewed or taken out membership of Darwin Triathlon Club, don't forget it's a very, very easy process these days as it can be done online. We have a shed load of events happening on our calendar so I would encourage you to go online to
https://www.securedvirtualnet.com/Sma/Triath/ and on the right hand side select New Membership or Renew Membership.

You can print out your receipt and bring it with you on Friday evening to the Splash N Dash at the Wave Pool Recreation Lagoon. Club membership is great value for money and joining up is often the trigger you need to come down and participate more often in our events.

What about signing up your partner as an early Christmas present ... now there's an idea ! Please note that our student membership category is for full time uni students only.

It's also exciting that we are heading to a new location - this will be our first event at the Wave Pool lagoon so hope to see you all there on Friday evening making tri history !

Our juniors continued their season with a triathlon at Lake Alexander yesterday. The youngsters are looking very experienced these days and the newer kids are very keen to reach that level. They have a large band of volunteers supporting them who make safety and fun the top priority. Our thanks to all those who assisted with the juniors yesterday.

4. Noosa was a wet suit swim and a bit drizzly. Courtney Atkinson came down on the bike but still managed to gather himself together enough for another win.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you skip dessert rather than pay a fortune for a light equipment alternative
... you have bargained with the family to let you race all over the country on the proviso you take them to Hawaii when you qualify

OTHER NEWS:

1. The Territory triathlon community was devastated to learn of the death last Friday of Tavis Johannsen (42). As well as being a passionate triathlete over all distances including Ironman, Tavis was also a past major sponsor of our NT Long Course Triathlon. With his latest business venture CycleZone Mooloolaba, Tavis and family were located on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Our sincere sympathy to his wife Fiona, daughters Sophie and Lani, his family and many friends. Tavis' funeral will take place at Maroochydore tomorrow.

2. I caught up with a number of people in Perth including former members Barry Silverlock (who is still very speedy), Ashley Manicaros (who was a bike course volunteer) and Greg Kahl who came down to support the Darwin triathletes. Lost count of those who have raced up here and just love our events and were on for a chat.
