Robyn's E News 15 Dec 2010

Photo: The Birk boys get into the spirit at our Christmas Splash N Dash

Hi All,

I did do an E News last week but just as I was about to press the button a lightening strike caused my PC to blink and I lost the lot. So here's another attempt to bring you up to date prior to Christmas.

The Christmas Splash N Dash sounded like it was a fun way to end the year. A big thank you to RD Rob Weatherald and the many volunteers who helped out on the day. Provisional results are attached.

I hope you have enjoyed the E News during 2010, I've certainly enjoyed bringing it to you. Your contributions are always appreciated and it certainly helps if you can give me a heads up when you or someone you know, is racing away.

Next I would like to wish everyone a hugely happy and safe Christmas and New Year festive season. Enjoy, wherever you are spending the time.

That's also the message from President Phil Hatty and the rest of your hardworking club committee who would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members - from youngest to oldest and everyone in between - that have raced this year, all the volunteers who have kindly donated their time, our coaches who have continued to support members by conducting very affordable open sessions and our sponsors who have supported our events ... it's been a great year for triathlon and we look forward to bringing our members more of the same in 2011.

Hi All,

Friday evening's Splash N Dash at Nightcliff Pool will be our last event for 2010. It's our traditional Christmas bash where you are all encouraged to don Christmas attire (it's a bit hard to swim in a Santa suit, but we have seen them on the run !) so give it some thought and at least grab a Xmas visor, a tinsel necklace or similar and join in the fun.

It's also the last event for this year for our juniors. For many of you it may be the first time you have seen them in action. The level of tri skills shown by the kids is remarkable as is their determination, so watch carefully! And be warned, we finish the evening off with a Junior/Senior relay and the kids often manage to outshine many of the adults. It's all good fun and a great way to go into the Christmas break.

And speaking of breaks, after this week E News will be on an ad hoc basis until prior to our first event in 2011. If you have something for the "FOR SALE / WANTED ETC" section and want it out there before Christmas, please email through by tomorrow evening.

3. Did you get your entry in for Challenge Cairns? I haven't heard that it filled.

4. I've had a few enquiries about club trisuits. We don't have any in stock. I have a couple of medium men's tri tops and a women's small tri top ($65). Also one pair of ladies medium 2 piece bathers ($55). Email if you are interested.

5. Your best option for trisuits is to ring your local bike store or shop online. Word of advice, take your measurements carefully and check against the manufacturers size chart. Tri suits aren't the sort of thing you can say "I always take medium" and hope for the best.

6. We may look at a further club uniform order in the New Year providing there is enough interest as minimum numbers are required.

7. Racing away and need a race belt? Please email if you haven't received one before as I still have a few Scody racebelts available for members at no cost.

Hi All,

Our Splash N Dash at Lake Alexander attracted a large crowd and went off really well. Race Director Phil Brownscombe treated us to a figure of eight transition which worked a treat. A huge thank you to Phil and to all the other volunteers who assisted with putting this event together and ensured it all ran smoothly.

A big welcome to all our new members. Their enthusiasm rubs off. We hope you have all been made to feel very welcome. I'm sure you will be glad you joined up ... we have a long history of ensuring new members enjoy having three times the fun.

Joining is easy online at https://www.securedvirtualnet.com/Sma/Triath/ . 2010/2011 membership is a mere $110 for seniors and $40 for juniors.
A family membership (2 adults, 2 children) is $220.

And no, it doesn't cost less next year. We have so many events & activities happening we think joining DTC is great value whatever time of year you join. Where else do you get to tri for $5 ... your fellow triathletes around Australia think nothing of paying $70 - $100 + .... and that's for each race !!

1. Online registrations for 2011 Ironman 70.3 Busselton will open at 9.00am (Western Australian Time) on Monday 22 November, 2010 through the online entry system at www.busseltonhalf.com . 1400 individual and 250 team entries will be allocated for the 2011 event.

2. The Tiger Brennan Drive Family Fun Run/Walk is on Sunday 28 November 2010. Pre-registration is required at www.growingnt.nt.gov.au

3. The team of Simon Cruickshank, Mark Anzin & Phil Brownscombe head down to Canberra this weekend for the AROC Paddy Pallin Adventure Race. The classic course is approx. 10km on foot, 20km mtb and 5km paddling. If completed in a certain time, competitors can move onto the advanced course ... more of the same. Good luck guys !

4. Stu Fitch was in a team at the Sri Chinmoy Triple Team (also in Canberra) at the weekend. They were 6th team overall and first in the 50+ team category. Stu did the 3.5km swim in 47.50 and the 12km run in 57.45.

5. Jac Crofton's new TT bike created a stir at the Splash N Dash on Friday.

6. Before leaving a race venue always check you have all your gear. So many things get left behind it's only a matter of time before someone loses something important. Besides, it's a big ask to expect someone to have your stinky shoes or singlet at their place until you wake up to the fact that they are missing.

7. Racing may have been over and done with Friday evening but Darwin was crawling with people out training over the weekend.

8. Weekend form guide: Shaye Hatty spent her birthday morning spinning her legs over in preparation for the Laguna Phuket Tri next weekend; Sue Parora was spotted in perfect time trial position on Dick Ward Drive; Tony West may be on the comeback trail as he was seen jogging comfortably at Fannie Bay; Simon Cruickshank had the wheels on the Time machine spinning; Bec Thyne was spotted getting some secret bike time in; Alex Moraitis is back (in Darwin and on the bike); Col Smith and Karen Wilson were keeping each other honest in a swim, bike brick; Steve Goat had a final hit out for Ironman WA and is looking great; and that's not counting those doing extra swimming and training tri's ... phew ... it's all go in tri land !

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you think it's hardly worth dirtying your training gear for an 8km run in a recovery week.
... you look up the yellow pages in each place you visit to see if they have any bike shops catering for triathletes
... you are still convinced that if you rest more than one day, your muscles will atrophy, your super-fit body will turn into a pile of mush and everyone in your age group will beat you.

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn

Hi All,

Have you started your Christmas go faster wish list yet? I'm motivated to ask Santa for a whole new package, not because I really need it but because I'd like to become a little more colour coordinated. The only way you can do that is to get the bike, shoes, helmet, trisuit etc all at once.

Over the top? Mmm, that's what I thought. Maybe I'll hang off for a bit.

But seriously, if you are looking for gift ideas and aren't yet a member or want to encourage someone to take up triathlon ... why not give the gift of club membership. At $110 until 30 June it's almost a stocking filler (you don't get many coffees or bottles of wine for that). Joining is an easy online process at https://www.securedvirtualnet.com/Sma/Triath/

Urgent .... we need a timekeeper for Friday evening. Please email if you can assist.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Following the report on our last event : Letter to the Editor (NT News 11 Nov 10) TIME FOR NT BROWN TROUT TOURNAMENT ...Is the Waterfront Slash and Dash (as reported in Tuesday NT News) inspired by the floaties frequently found in our public lagoons, oceans and water parks? Seems like a golden opportunity for NT Tourism to market the event in combination with the Lake Leanyer Pooh and Paddle or the Nightcliff Beach e-coli sprint, and in the process, create a unique Territory lifestyle adventure challenge. (Signed Felix, Leanyer).

2. Greg Kahl says although he wasn't fully prepared for the Augusta Anaconda Adventure Race, he did plan a better time than what he ended up with. Greg says "The run leg was great, but starting at the back of the pack and getting around the slower runners caused many people to take risky jumps and transfers over the rocks. Broken arms and legs happened, I missed timed a jump and ended up as a pin ball bouncing from rock to rock until I hit, and no pun intended, rock bottom. That took a lot out of me, but I kept going. Swim was good, and not having paddled since last summer, the 13km ocean paddle really drained me. Not to worry, 32km Mountain Bike leg was where I was planning to make back some time, unfortunately at the 15km mark, after passing so many people, on a fast downhill, at about 52km/hr (maxed out at 57km/hr) my rear tyre locked up. What caused this was a broken rear derailer, and my day was done. I attempted to run the remaining 17km but it was a losing battle. about 9-10km out from the end of the bike leg, finally a guy came past with a chain breaker, and thus enabling me to make a single speed bike (note to all mtb riders, better to have one speed then none at all, carry a chain breaker), so 16km/hr was now max on the bike. I had nothing left for the final run leg, and finished in a disappointing time 7 hours 8 mins. I was looking at under 6 hours, so guess what is on the cards for next year???".

3. David Janmaat was also in action at the Augusta Anaconda.

4. For those adventure race enthusiasts out there a call has gone out regarding an inaugural Adventure Race in Dili. Details are a little sketchy but it will be held on Sunday 12th December. Will be a 12 hour race (from 6am to 6pm) and will comprise of running, walking, paddling and riding. They are looking to have 3 mixed teams of 4 competitors from Darwin. Apparently Airnorth will supply free flights (only have to pay the taxes (about $150) for the 12 competitors. Competitors will have to organize food and accommodation (Timor Lodge is about $25 per night) whilst in Dili. There is a flight on the Saturday and then competitors could go home Monday (or stay for a while and enjoy the scenery and diving etc).
Entry into the race will be free, and it won’t be too hard core! – just fun. They need expressions of interest ASAP so as to arrange flights. If anyone is interested please email Dave at infoadventureracetl@gmail.com for further information.

5. For those with a Tassie connection ... Devonport Triathlon (Tas) date has been changed to Saturday 15 January 2011.

6. The development squad juniors who participated in the Qld Junior Tour and competed at the Qld All Schools Triathlon gained a wealth of experience. Well done to all. Tour photos are now up on Flickr page.

7. Interested persons are invited to Bicycle NT's AGM , which will be held on Sunday 5th December 2010 at 10 am, at Jane Aagaard's Electoral Office in Nightcliff (where the market is held). Further info: www.bicyclent.org.au

8. There are some spiffy new bikes making debut (or is that de-butt) appearances. I thought it was still a few weeks until Christmas???

9. Speaking of Christmas, if you are after go faster gear to have under your tree, now would be the time to head into the bike shop. Avoid disappointment .... don't leave your shopping until the last minute.

10. Kate Murphy got amongst the open women at Shepparton yesterday. Kate was 7th overall and won her age group.

11. Heading to NSW to race? Note Callala and Bateman's Bay triathlons have switched dates (Bateman's Bay clashed with a circus).

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... you are tempted to do your long rides in togs so you don't end up with dodgy tan lines
... your child comes home after doing well at the school cross country and tells you he took it out in a nice pace that he could hold.....& that everyone else died
... you clean your bike more often than your car

Safe Training,
Cheers,

Hi All,

Splash N Dash (or slash n dash if you read today's NT News) at the Waterfront Lagoon was again well attended and proved a very competitive event. We certainly provided great entertainment for the patrons of the various eating and watering hole establishments and they in turn were very encouraging!

Our thanks to RD Lisa Svara and the many volunteers who helped out at the event. We really appreciated your efforts in putting on a fantastic event for us.

Good news is that the "monster sucker" fish stayed out of the way during the event proper although he did nudge a few who warmed up prior to the race !

JUNIOR NEWS:

1. The development squad juniors all finished with smiles on their faces in Brisbane. Well done. Due to some timing difficulties results are not yet finalised.

2. Next junior event is:

Sunday 14 November 2010 Triathlon, Lake Alexander, 8am start.

FOR SALE / WANTED ETC:

1. ADVTS WANTED: Please email details of items for sale or things you want to buy eg tri gear, bikes etc for inclusion in the next E News.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Fannie Bay Swim date has been announced. 24 July 2011 (morning swim)

2. Our members often make use of the velodrome. Unfortunately there have been some recent incidents which indicate that some users are unfamiliar with basic safety rules at the venue.

Please ensure you: a. Only enter the track through (or over) the gate to the right hand side of the canteen. This way there is only one spot where you have to worry about riders entering/exiting the track; b. Look to the left before you walk through the gate (or jump over it); c. Only ride in an anti clockwise direction; d. Ride in a predicatable fashion. If you are moving to the outside of the track to pull over indicate your intentions and look over your shoulder.

3. How amazing that rescued Chilean miner Edison Pena (nicknamed the runner by his fellow miners) ran in the New York City marathon. He trained underground !

4. E News short and sweet ... knew you would be waiting for Splash N Dash results.

Hi All,

Grab a coffee, there is a bit to get through today, including some details of this weekend's block buster handicap event and some rule reminders.

CLUB MEMBERSHIP reminder:

Haven't renewed or taken out your 2010/2011 membership yet?

We encourage you to sign up for membership today at https://www.securedvirtualnet.com/Sma/Triath/

Darwin Triathlon Club membership fees include state and national affiliation, insurance 24/7 for training and racing in TA sanctioned events and is the best value for money in the country. Not to mention you are joining the best triathlon club in the World (well, we think so anyway).

Membership fees: Senior $110, Junior (19 & Under) $40; Family (2 adults, 2 juniors) $220

Visitors with a current TA membership card are also welcome to participate at our events.

We have a shed load of events between now and 30 June, including Arafura Games Triathlon (it will be a condition of entry that you must be a member to participate in 2011).

RESULTS:

1. Ironman 70.3 Austin, 1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21km run

Male: James Gunnama (RSA) 3.53.57 Female: Nicola Spirig (SUI) 4.09.35

NEXT EVENT:

Sunday 24 October 2010
Triathlon
Lake Alexander
7am (Registration closes at 6.30am - not registered on time = no race)

500m swim, 13km bike, 4km run

Race Director: Chad Anderson
Registration: Ron Griep / Emma Winterflood
Timekeepers: Emma Winterflood / Volunteer Required
Fruit / Ice: Volunteer required

(Please email if you can assist)

Note:
1. The format for this weekend will be a handicap event over 500/13/4. The course will be a familiar one which will be covered during the race briefing. Handicaps have been determined for all members based on performances at club events over the past 6 months over varying distances and disciplines.

The race will commence promptly at 7am and registration will be open as normal and close at 6:30am – this earlier rego close time will enable adjustments to handicaps if required and explanation of the course and race format.

For those unfamiliar with handicap racing - The race will NOT commence with a mass start as usual. Rather, each member is allocated a different start time (which will be available at rego) with the slower competitors being the first to start and the faster competitors going off last. With this staggered start format the end result is that the race comes together towards the finish and line honours is up for grabs for anyone willing to push themselves above and beyond.

This style of racing is intended to be fun, there are many races within races so we encourage everyone to come down and have a race, it will be a great event.

2. Please note: you are required to obey all traffic regulations when competing and this includes stopping at RED lights. We do not have road closure. If our members are reported for going through red lights (as has happened in the past) it can jeopardise our ability to obtain the required permits for our events. It is disappointing that a number of people were seen to go through on the red at the last event ... no repeats please, this reflects badly on our club.

3. No drafting allowed. You must keep to the left at all times, so we should never see riders two abreast unless overtaking.

4. No MP3, iPods etc are allowed. Torsos must be covered during ride and run.

5. Triathlon rules are in place to ensure safety and fairness of all participants.

6. Overall results will also be compiled for this event for purposes of the pointscore calculations.

FOR SALE/ WANTED ETC:

1. WANTED TO BUY: Small (41cm) second hand road bike for one of our junior girls. Contact Amanda: 0413 801 357

2. Items for E News by Sunday 9pm please.

REPORTING CYCLE PATH HAZARDS

1. Reporting broken glass, potholes etc on cycle paths is easy online. Just go to http://www.nt.gov.au/transport/ntroads/faults/cyclepaths/feedback.shtml

OTHER NEWS:

1. Craig Walton (partner and coach of Emma Snowsill) is one of Australia’s greatest triathletes. He competed professionally for 17 years, winning a total of six world cups before being forced into retirement in the mid 2000’s due to glandular fever followed by chronic fatigue. He did make a quick comeback before officially retiring in 2008. He recently announced that he’s coming out of retirement (again) to compete in the Noosa Triathlon at the end of this month and will definitely be one to watch.

2. New Ironman distance event Challenge Cairns will be held 5 June 2011. Further info: http://www.challenge-cairns.com/

3. Hold the bus. There is court action pending on the Lake Las Vegas date for 2011 Ironman 70.3 World Championships (11 Sept 2011).

4. Our mums to be are all looking fit and healthy. That stork is going to be very busy next year.

5. I'm being asked a lot of questions about qualifying events for the various ITU World Championships events. I've attached the information regarding selection points events for 2011 ITU Olympic, Sprint and Long Course events. It also contains info on the TA Triathlon National Championship which is a three race series format this season. (Please disregard the section dealing with ITU Juniors - NT have no athletes in that category).

6. This info was previously circulated to members via Triathlon Australia. If you did not receive, it may well be because you selected "no email" option when completing your online membership. If that's the case, you can miss important information and announcements so I would encourage you to go back into your personal record and enable emails to be forwarded.

7. Alice Springs is slowly coming back to normal after the Masters Games. It was down to 5 degrees the night before the triathlon and teeming rain prior to the duathlon but both events were run successfully. The Alice crew and all the volunteers are to be congratulated.

8. The sold out Noosa Triathlon is rapidly approaching. Can you believe how quick a triathlon year goes?
