Hi All,

It's great to see everyone out training with so much enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment. We are indeed lucky to live and train in Tri Paradise! ("Tri Heaven" being reserved for Kona)

We are also extremely fortunate to have such an active committee & coaches and a culture of volunteering which is second to none. Because of their efforts we are spoilt with event choices and training opportunities all at a fraction of the cost of "down south".

We have had many people come along and "tri" our activities of late. On behalf of our President John Thyne & the committee I would like to encourage those athletes to join up and become part of the club we are so very proud of. We have a shed load of events coming up on our calendar and joining up is a great incentive to come along and participate on a regular basis.

Joining is easy just go to https://www.securedvirtualnet.com/Sma/Triath/

OTHER NEWS:

1. Due to bookings at the Trailer Boat Club, Darwin Surf Club has had to change the date of their Fannie Bay Swim Classic. The new date is now 20th June 2010 with a 10.30am start.

2. Updated scores: Railway lines on Wishart Road 3, cyclists 0 .... Chad Anderson, Heath Porter and Nic French all bounced around in the rain inspecting the bitumen on Saturday morning. Which bit of "get off and walk over in the rain" is in an unintelligible foreign language I wonder? This time, not to much damage to body and bikes ... thank goodness !

3. The Darwin Athletics Club is looking for a paid part time coach. Further details see: http://www.darwinathletics.org.au)

4. One of our members works at Wickham Point. Yesterday (between 6 - 7 am), two lots of two cyclists were seen (by many on early shift) riding up and then down Channel Island Road, putting themselves (and to a certain degree also others) at risk. One pair were at times riding abreast, with the person in the middle of the road practically not visible from behind because of an ineffective, or not existing, tail light. Motorists had to slow down to the speed of the cyclists (approx 30km/hr) before they could safely overtake the group due to oncoming traffic. This incident was then brought-up by workers during their shift pre-start meeting.

You can imagine how hard it is trying to defend the rights of cyclists as road users in situations like this.

Channel Point Road on weekdays is quite busy between 6 - 8am. It is also worth mentioning that there is an increasing number of people currently travelling to and from Darwin LNG Plant due to some planning activities for this year's major Plant Shut Down. During the Shut Down itself, which will be held in April and May, an estimated 400 people will be working on site on a 24/7 rotating roster. It is believed that some of those people will be taken on site with buses but it is important to know that there will be even more traffic on those roads than normal. A lot of interstate workers, not familiar with the local roads, will be amongst the people travelling to the site and (as experienced in the past) their driving habits are sometimes a bit less defensive than the average local's. They may also not be used to our road and weather conditions.

It would be timely to suggest here that all cyclists take every effort to be highly visible on our roads and that all traffic rules are obeyed.
We would hate to see anyone getting injured (or worse) doing what we all love to do.

5. Noosa Triathlon entries open online 1 June 2010.

6. Lance Armstrong has been spotted training in Hawaii, on a TT bike, in very "tri" positioning.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you can't see what all the fuss is about - seeing guys in speedos doesn't seem that big a deal to you
... you can use "easy" and "10" in the same sentence
... you have running shoes in varying degrees of decomposition including: used, well-worn, spent but still good, and useless but "I keep them just in case"

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn
