Robyn's E News 8 February 2012

Hi All,

We still have few remaining spots to fill on this season’s calendar, so if you haven’t yet volunteered in 2011/2012 please put up your hand for one of the following openings:

Timekeeping: Sat 14 April 2012 4.30pm at Kerran Mudgway Memorial (Lake Bennett)

Fruit / Ice: Sat 14 April 2012 4.30pm at Kerran Mudgway Memorial (Lake Bennett); Sunday 4 March 2012 7am Lake Alexander; Sunday 1 April 2012 7am Lake Alexander

Theory is, if everyone helps out at just one event per year, we can maintain the number of the events you like to have and also the low cost of our fees.

A quick glance at the current calendar reveals that we have some fabulous volunteers who help out often but also have those who have yet to help out. (In some cases, a number of people have requested same day and same duty so you may have not been added due to the position already being filled).

If “not knowing what to do” is preventing you from doing your bit for the club, I’ve attached the “How To” for fruit/ice again as well as time keeping. These should largely remove the mystery from those roles.

What do we do in the future if we can no longer rely on volunteers? Reduce number of events? Increase fees? Increase event fees? No longer hold events? That’s the question your hard working, voluntary President and committee members are currently looking into and to that end are inviting your participation at our up coming Planning Day (see details below).

Please let me know if I’ve missed you or someone you know? Good luck to all.

3. Juniors kick off the remainder of their season at Lake Alexander on Sunday.

4. Are you getting more than one copy of E News? Please advise preferred address if you are.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …
… friends are insanely jealous of your tanned legs ~ until they realise the tan stops where you bike shorts start.
… you have given up trying to go on training runs/rides with your boyfriends because they don’t take to kindly when you kick their butt
… your friend (girl) gets a new bike and tells you it’s a pretty blue. You (bloke) get a new bike and tell her the chain ring ratios.

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn

OTHER NEWS:

1. Barry Sullivan was speeding towards the finish line when an almighty hamstring cramp pulled him up … fast ! Ouch, I felt his pain.

2. Budgie smugglers appeared as kit of choice for a couple of the guys on Saturday. No it wasn’t our man Pete Brady, he was in fact in jammers.

3. Nice to find the cooler spots in Lake Alex.

4. Ironman 70.3 Singapore entry closes soon (max numbers or 18 Feb which ever is reached first).

5. Hearing there are bookings being made for Bali International Triathlon again this year. Being so close to home, it’s been a popular destination event for our members and with the introduction of the sprint distance as well as the fun run, it’s a good one for families. The “new” bike course is yet to be announced, but sounds similar to the original 2007 course.

6. Unfortunately Monica Stewart has withdrawn from Geelong OD event (this weekend) due to injury. Mon was the National Tri Series F55-59 age group series winner last year. She is recovering well and says she’s now on track for Mooloolaba.

7. The following information has been provided by aviation safety officer Chris Loynes of the cycling club: There has been a recent rule change which has permitted the airlines to develop policies for the carriage of small CO2 cylinders (of 28 grams or 50ml capacity – our cylinders are fine) for the purposes of inflating bike tyres. QANTAS and Virgin Australia have adopted the identical policy which is:

The carriage of small gas cartridges containing carbon dioxide (CO2) gas are permitted for carriage in either checked or carry-on baggage. The following criteria applies to the carriage of these items:

no more than four per person; cartridge capacity must not exceed 28gm (50ml) each; cartridges must be in good condition; cartridges must be packed or packaged to prevent contact or damage. (wrapped in clothing or placed in shoes is okay-don’t leave them loose in the bottom of the bike box)

Although not specified above Chris doesn’t think the allowances are cumulative, that is 1 person can’t carry 48 cylinders for 12 passengers. This is a standard policy applied to other items such as ammunition.

QANTAS advised their staff on the 20th January, Virgin last week so we shouldn’t have a problem from now on. Chris has yet to check with QANTASLINK or Air North yet, but will do so soon. Thanks Chris.

8. For those of you who only dirt bash once a year, it’s time to knock the cobwebs off the mountain bike, get the tyres pumped up and check if you need any repairs done !

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn
