Robyn's E News 14 March 2012

Hi All,

Good news this morning with the cyclone warning cancelled for Darwin.

Obviously it continues to be extremely wet and windy so do take special care out there on the roads and allow plenty of extra time to get from A to B.

What does this mean for our event on Sunday? If a cyclone warning or watch is current for Darwin we would not proceed with our event.

Should the inclement weather continue, a decision will be made at the weekend whether to proceed in the advertised format or to modify the event. Safety of competitors will be the main priority so road conditions & any weather warnings will be taken into consideration.

In the meantime, enjoy your time on the wind trainer or your mtb and/or sloshing through the puddles when you are out running. Bring out your inner child !

TRIATHLON TIPS:

1. Triathlon Australia’s website has lots of useful information posted. Click here to see training tips and navigate around. To check out the member log in area you need your TA member number.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… you were mightily miffed when the pools closed yesterday
… you have put off using your new running shoes for at least another few days
… you know a no smoking section in a restaurant is about as useful as a no peeing section in a pool

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn

Hi All,

Darwin is now officially on cyclone watch with the low expected to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 42 to 48 hours. Let me see, that would be right around the time about 25 of our members are heading for Ironman 70.3 Singapore .. I guess they just go with the good old tri think … if it’s out of your control, don’t worry about it.

On a brighter note, our life member Ernie Koch is celebrating his birthday today, so from all of us

HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY ERNIE

OTHER NEWS:

1. Ernie Koch was out for a quick 40km spin on his bike yesterday & did a gym session this morning to celebrate his birthday.

2. Hearing that the Waterfront Lagoon fish has been given a nickname (Rufus the crocodile).

3. Macca came in at 14th place in Devonport about 4 mins back.

4. Not sure that Australia has secured that 3rd Olympic spot for the men yet. Sexton was already high in the rankings.

5. Looking like we might have the 3 Emma’s in London.

6. Those heading to Singapore with Qantas bike boxes would be well advised to add a bit more tape to waterproof/hold their boxes together. Triathletes worst nightmare …. a soggy box !

7. Too many to mention, but there is an awesome amount of good training form on show out there. Darwin …. tri training heaven.

BASIC RULES TO REMEMBER:

On the ride, keep to the LEFT, unless overtaking someone, and obey the road rules – they still apply even though you are in a race. Remember the road is open to general traffic and you are sharing the road with other competitors and motorists.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… you find yourself using cycling signals when out for a group run
… you are racing away & meet a fellow competitor for the first time & they can tell you what events you have done and what time you did them in (and you can reciprocate)
… you are planning a water bottle cull

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn

OTHER NEWS:

1. Triathlon Australia CEO Anne Gripper and TA Board member David Ferrier were in Darwin this morning and met with Triathlon NT committee regarding the implementation of the new national membership model. Good news for the Territory.

2. A huge thank you to Nic French for answering our call for an Excel Wizard. Thanks to Nic, we now have a back up to our timing database system that Allan Stancombe continues to maintain for us. For those of you who don’t know Al, he is the mainstay (and has been for years and years) of our result production and posting to our website. Al’s contribution to our club is highly valued. A dodgy knee forced Al to drop his tri career a couple of years ago, up until then he was one of our top local age group athletes .. tri’s loss is cycling’s gain as he is now a passionate cyclist.

3. Michelle Mitchell is a nomination in the NT Sportsperson of Year category of the NT Sports Awards. Michelle’s nomination acknowledges her outstanding ironman distance results during 2011.

4. A large group of members are finalising their preparations for Ironman 70.3 Singapore (18 March), we have three looking sharp for Ironman Melbourne (a week later), more preparing for Ironman Australia at Port Mac in May and still others training the house down for Bali and Cairns. And that doesn’t count those specifically targeting our major events coming up. No wonder the competition was up a couple of notches at Palmerston.

5. Photos from MTB tri are up on Flickr. Race 1 photos will be up shortly.

BASIC RULES TO REMEMBER:

Do not ride in the transition area – you must mount and dismount your bike at the marked zones/lines.

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn
