2. NT Open Water C'ship (5km swim & 1.2km swim) will be held at Lake Bennett on Saturday 20 Sept 08. Entry forms available www.nt.swimming.org.au from Monday 26 July 08.

3. Details of sessions conducted by triathlon coaches are under "Training" on the club website www.members.iinet.net.au/~darwintriclub

4. Watch for the publication of the Selection Criteria for ITU Worlds - Olympic & Long Distance - due out this week.

5. If you are thinking of making a push for a spot for the Gold Coast and/or Perth, please read the documents carefully so that you are familiar with the process and events used.

6. We have had some feedback from a concerned motorist who works with one of our members and commutes on Sat mornings around the back of Robertson Barracks, where the group ride goes. He says that while some cyclists do display lights, a lot of them do not and if they have separated from the other riders it can put them in danger of not being seen. Perhaps it is timely to remind everyone out on the roads that as cyclists we have a responsibility to ensure motorists can see us. So please, check your lights (front and rear) and wear light, bright tops. Haven't got lights - get some or wait until daylight to ride - don't risk your life for the sake of half an hour.

7. ABC Half Marathon (Sunday 27 July 08 7am start) - race briefing is Saturday 26 July 08 at 4.30pm. Don't forget to collect your race number extra and course info as these aren't available on race morning.

8. The Darwin Surf Club annual Beach2Bridge will take place on Saturday 16 August 08.

9. A lot of events not conducted by Darwin Triathlon Club are mentioned in the E News as items of interest to members. While I make every effort to pass on correct information it is up to you to check directly with event organisers if you wish to participate in non DTC events.

10. Good luck to all those taking part in the Half Marathon on Sunday.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... you open the freezer and have to move ice packs to reach the ice cream
... you know the names of more Hawaii Ironman winners than Chief Ministers
... you are in heavy training & all you can think about is dinner & bed that night .. and it's only 11am

Robyn's E News 21 July 08

Hi All,

A flat tyre on the trailer necessitated a quick change of plans for the race yesterday morning. Transition was set up down near the shed & athletes had a bit of brain gym remembering which way to go in and out of T1 & T2. Some managed better than others !!

Our thanks to Race Director Rob Brooks and the band of helpers who assisted with this event. We are proud of our club culture of willing volunteer assistance and this race was no exception. Well done everyone who helped with set up, timing, fruit & ice, pack up etc etc!

It was also great to see the large number of spectators down encouraging all the competitors and giving our new members a warm welcome.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Jerome Bosmans has been in Europe for over a month now & still has a few weeks leave to go. He says its a torture not been able to train properly and he has been mainly doing ocean swims with the wet suit (15-17 degrees C.), running and some cross training such as quad (?), trekking in the Pyrenees (up to 2,700 m high with some "eternal snow"), a lot of driving from North to South of France and a bit of partying! He says watching the Tour de France live is great and Bastille day was memorable (Cadel Evans got the yellow jersey! the French are not tough enough). The weather is a bit chilly according to Jerome, but coming from Darwin, Europe is always freezing! He has also put on weight, probably two kilogrammes, too much good and buttery food!

2. Al Stancombe hopped off the plane from Europe and was straight down to race at Lake Alexander. That's keen ! Welcome back Al.

3. After our baby boom it's good to see Alison Hill back participating. Reports also that Emma Winterflood has been spotted back out on the bike as well.

4. The latest Australian Triathlete mag has a write up on Hawaii 70.3 age groupers and DTC members get a good mention.

5. Ali Fitch was competing overnight in Ironman USA Lake Placid & came down in atrocious conditions. She was second out of the swim and about 30 secs down when at around 70km into the ride Ali came off her bike. There was torrential rain that obscured a pothole in the road, and when she hit she went over the handlebars and landed (initially) on her head. Her helmet is cleanly split in half, from end to end. Shortly after Ali’s prang two other riders provided encores in the same pothole. She has a lot of (relatively) light road rash from shoulder to ankle reduced, it is thought, by the volume of water on the road – reportedly she hydroplaned for 10-12 metres. Lots of bruising on left elbow and hip, sore ankle (pedal didn’t immediately release)and neck. She was evacuated to hospital by ambulance, where first an x-ray and then a CAT scan appeared to indicate no serious complications. We send Ali our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

6. Triathlon NT technical delegate, Phil Blumberg attended the Triathlon Australia Technical Committee meeting in Sydney at the weekend. Look forward to his report.

7. Vicki Woodrow was back in Darwin for a few days and participated in yesterday's short course event. Great to catch up with Vicki and also to see she hasn't lost that competitive spirit.
