Photo: The boys are ready to rock at Race 1 Sprint Series
Hi All,
While the thunderstorms overnight Saturday did keep some of you in bed, we had a pleasing increase in numbers for Race 1 of the Sprint Series at Palmerston yesterday.
RD Barry Sullivan did an awesome job preparing for this event. He had a lot to think about with changes in the car park due to construction works, weather, extra volunteers required for turnaround points etc. A huge thank you to Barry and all those volunteers who helped out. We really, really couldn't do it without you. Special thanks to the non members who jumped in and assisted with timekeeping, much appreciated.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS - CAN YOU HELP?:
1. We urgently need to increase the pool of volunteers to assist as Technical Officials at our events. With NT Sprint, NT Jnr Championships, Club Champs & Arafura Games Triathlon coming up soon, it is unrealistic to expect the same volunteers will be available for all.
We would like to encourage parents and partners as well as athletes themselves to attend our next course. The course takes a couple of hours and there is an open book exam to do + a practical component (TO at event). Even if competing at the above events, athletes are encouraged to attend this course so that they can fill in as a TO if injured or sitting out an event for some reason.
What: Level 1 Technical Officials Course
When: Friday 11 March 2011
Where: tbc (most likely Parap)
Time: 6.30pm
Cost: Free
Interested?: Please email phil.blumberg@nt.gov.au to be added to attendance list.
OTHER NEWS:
1. Some people listen to race briefs better than others. Who was that guy that rode back into T2 from the wrong direction?
2. And some people count laps better than others. One guy (who will remain nameless but who is often late) jumped out of the pool, then realised there was no way he could be finished and jumped back in again.
3. This one we do appreciate: another competitor finished, then came over to say he did two laps short in the swim so was a dnf. As he is on the improve and we could have assumed that he had had a good day, this is a very sportsmanlike gesture. Thanks Matt.
4. It was interesting to see how everyone tackled the puddles. Some tip toed through them, some went out of their way to get around them and others charged straight through. More than one comment was heard about it being a poor choice to wear new shoes.
5. Good to see Ali Fitch back racing. Ali has had a woeful run of injury and illness so let's hope 2011 changes all that.
6. It's been a mixed bag weatherwise in NZ for those preparing for IM New Zealand this Saturday. Sue Parora, Michelle Mitchell and Stu Fitch are on the count down.
7. From Darwin City Council:
"Lake Alexander has been temporarily closed due to an isolated area of high bacteria content that was detected in the lake during the routine water quality monitoring program.
The current quality of the water in Lake Alexander does not achieve the levels required for swimming as outlined in the Northern Territory Guidelines for Recreational Water Quality.
As a consequence, the lake will be temporarily closed to swimmers whilst further testing is undertaken.
Darwin City Council CEO, Brendan Dowd said the lake would be closed for public health reasons until the additional tests showed acceptable water quality levels.
Darwin City Council is committed to maintaining the highest environmental practices to protect the community and our environment. Council apologises for any inconvenience.
The public will be advised when the lake is reopened. Please heed all signs and refrain from entering the water."
7. There is a huge group from Darwin heading over for Ironman 70.3 Singapore on 20 March. Last count had us at 26 so there are going to be lots of familiar faces out on course. Ironman 70.3 Singapore has also sold out.
8. Chasing age group prize money close to home - you may like to check out the Ko Samui Triathlon 24 April 2011 http://www.triathlonsamui.com/index.php?lang=en
9. Sheffield's took the opportunity to catch up with tri friends at yesterday's event. They are on the move next month and we will miss them (and their willingness to contribute to our sport).
10. Our members now travel far and wide. Shaye & Phill Hatty are heading off next week for the Abu Dhabi Triathlon.
YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...
... you think time spent tooling around with technology gadgets is training time wasted.
... it takes a few seconds for your fellow triathletes to recognise you when you are in work clothes & with makeup on.
... you have already cleaned your bike after yesterday's race
Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn
