Hi All,
Our first event for season 08/09 was also Sign On Day. A huge welcome to all those who raced with us for the first time yesterday & look forward to seeing you at many more of our events.

We all appreciated the efforts of Race Director Pete Svara & the many volunteers who assisted with the event. Thanks to all. The new PA is making a world of difference at race brief time. It was a bit chilly early but conditions then proved perfect for triathlon.

Info for Challenge Series and qualifying for TA Age Group Team for ITU World Triathlon Championships, Gold Coast Sept 09



Online Entries

Online Entries will commence on Monday 11 August at www.challengeseries.org.au. Only online entries will be accepted.

Worlds Qualifying Spots

As host nation each Olympic Distance Age Group has a maximum of 25 spots available, instead of the normal 20.

Points Allocation

Points will be allocated to positions 1-25 in each age group. i.e. 1st will get 25 points and 25th will get 1 point. The Perth Challenge, the 2009 Australian Olympic Distance Triathlon Championships is weighted to reflect the stature of the race and accordingly awards double points. i.e. 1st will get 50 points and 25th will get 2 points.

Compulsory Registration

Due to the expected high participant numbers for the Olympic Distance Triathlons, all competitors must register in person and rack their bikes the day before the race. The registration period will be between 3.00-7.00pm on the Saturday.

Application to Participation

The five key stages to becoming a team member, including the selection policy, will be released by August 1.

Entry Fees

One of the aims of the new series is to offer a consistent product and experience that is good value for money. Part of this consistency is pricing, with entry fees (by category) fixed across the seven locations.

OTHER NEWS:
1. On the 13th of July the Katherine Multisports Club will be holding a bike/kayak race ( quick 66). Starting from town at 7am, cycle to the Gorge, kayak to the end of the 3rd gorge and back and then cycle back to town. The race can be done as an individual or in a team with a different person doing each leg or alternatively two people can do the bike leg and then hop in a double canoe/kayak for the kayak leg then both cycle back into town. We need to know numbers by early next week. If there is less than 5 competitors we will not be able to run it. Please email Rod McLellan rodmclellan@aapt.net.au to register your interest

2. 4X (Four Cross) Racing is simply racing mtbs on a BMX track. Jingili BMX Club, Abala Road, Marrara has 4X Racing starting Friday 11 July 08 (registration 6.15 -7pm). Two classes: 8-14 yrs & 15+. Requirements - Full faced helmet; LS shirt;Long pants or shorts & knee & shin protection, enclosed footwear; technical - mtb must has at least 2 of: 26" wheels front & rear; functional front suspension; more than 1 working rear gear. 3. Phuket Triathlon registrations are now closed. I have some inside info so if you still want to participate - enter now & be wait listed. They are yet to sort their tour group bookings & this could free up some spots.

4. Over 500,000 spectators came out to watch the Ironman European Championships at the weekend and saw Macca go under 8 hrs.

5. A couple of our members had interesting weekends - Kathy McKay had a construction fence fall on her as she rode by and Louise Ogden lost a toe wrestle with some concrete.

6. Thinking of doing Ironman 70.3 Singapore in September?? Recommend getting your entry in now as they are over 1,000 already and expect to reach cut off very soon.

7. Date claimer - Ride to Work Day is 15 Oct 08.

8. Dave Janmaat heads for Singapore this weekend along with the rest of the team. For the last month Dave has been in Dili, East Timor, volunteering with a medical clinic and although he works six and half days a week I has been able to squeeze in a bit of training. An early run most mornings means he beats the buses, taxis, motorbikes, UN police cars, pigs, goats and dogs out of bed. He runs along the foreshore past grand old Portugese churches and local people still living in UN tents. Given it is the dry season he has taken his chances and has been swimming in the bay which has a huge statue of Jesus watching over Dili, another reminder of the Portugese days. As long as he doesn't catch dengue, malaria or tuberculosis he should put in a good showing in Singapore!

OTHER NEWS:

1. Phil Blumberg, Triathlon NT Technical Delegate advises the following wetsuit rule changes for age groupers: For distances up to 1500 m wetsuits are forbidden above 22C (decrease from 24C); 1501m to 3000m - forbidden above 23C (decrease from 24C). There are other wetsuit rule changes for Elite, U23 & Jnr competitors & these will be reflected on TA's website shortly.

2. New season age groups will now apply at our events. From 1 July your age will now be "As at 31 December 2008".

3. One of the competitors at the Bali Triathlon was Cam Begg from Wadeye. Cam did his swim training in a billabong.

4. Former Alice Springs Tri Club member Jeff White won his age group at Ironman Japan in 10.00.01 - congratulations Jeff.

5. Triathlon Australia has announced the dates for the Challenge Series. Events will be conducted in Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane, Hobart, Sydney, Perth & Geelong in this exciting new look series. Further information including dates, fees etc see www.triathlon.org.au

6. The new PA system has been purchased and was in action at the Teams Event. No more straining to hear race briefs now!
