Robyn's E News 27 February 2012

Hi All,

A large group of members from diverse backgrounds gave up their Sunday to participate in our Club Planning Day yesterday.

A big thank you to all those who attended and in particular to Graeme Parsons and Helen Clarke who donated their time to act as facilitators. They kept proceedings to a strict time schedule and had participants out of the “swim” and on the “bike” in a timely fashion. After a nutrition break (lunch organised by Bin Birk), they skilfully guided the group through to the home ‘run’ and across the finish line (early)!

The input from the Planning Day is now being worked on with a view to present the recommendations at the next committee meeting. Rest assured we have a great club and a wonderful group of people with the energy and drive to ensure it remains that way.

We are very grateful to Fannie Bay Gourmet Meats for their contribution of butchers paper for use on the day.

JUNIOR REPORT:

Our junior coordinator Jason Jones reports on Sunday’s junior event:

A coolish morning greeted the eager participants at yesterday’s junior mountain bike challenge at Lake Alexander. The cool water conditions kept the crocodiles away whilst all 3 age groups were given a staggered start for the swim leg.

Sub juniors led the field giving juniors and the 4 seniors something to chase. The highlight was the handicapped teams event to finish which was closely contested and raced in great spirit.

All enjoyed the occasion including the parents who once again provided great support. Thank you.

Well done to all juniors!

Reminder next junior event is at Lake Alexander on the 18 March 2012 due to cancellation of skills session at Casuarina pool (swimming carnival)

UNIFORM ORDER UPDATE:

1. Uniform order has just been delivered. Once sorted, I’ll email those concerned regarding collection options.

OTHER NEWS:

1. British Olympic triathlon hopeful Alistair Brownlee has been dealt a setback in his preparations for London 2012 after suffering an Achilles injury. I’m sure this is music to the ears of many but we do hope he recovers fully in time for the Olympics – watching the Brownlee brothers in full flight is an awesome experience.

2. Many of you will know Barry Smart. He retired a couple of years ago and did some travelling but still answers the call to act as a technical official for us when need arises. We have had news that Barry suffered a small heart attack & spent a few days in hospital. Barry still maintains a strong interest in the club and we wish him a very speedy recovery.

3. If you see Lucy Thompson and Berky this week, please wish them good luck as they are heading over to compete in the Abu Dhabi Triathlon. Also competing will be Matt Redmond. Any body else going??

4. In line for another Broken Spoke Award nomination, Jac Crofton is feeling a lot better with the general soreness gone and the wounds healing. She just needs the collarbone to knit! Jac had her first session back on the ergo yesterday afternoon and is already looking to the future.

5. Matt King was on the podium at the MTB Nationals over the weekend. Matt took out the Expert category. Congratulations Matt. He (and a number of others with a mtb bent) now eyes the Alice Springs Enduro in May.

6. Did you know our Women’s Series trophy used to be based on very short distance options which introduced many women to the sport back then? A number of years ago, we found our female members were opting to do the Sprint distance (and so were ineligible for the Women’s Series award) and many of the guys only wanted to do the shorter option. The decision to conduct the Women’s & Sprint Series over the one distance and offer a short option open to all members, has proved successful and popular.

7. Amy Pallentine is the lastest to have a run in with that fish at the Waterfront. Amy was out of there in a flash and says if that’s nature she’s not having any of it !

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… you can pass on the plate of Tim Tams without hesitating
… you feel naked without a water bottle in your hand
… you groan when the alarm goes off but feel great when that session is done

Safe training,
Cheers,
Robyn
