MEMBER FEEDBACK:

1. Note to members from Erin Whitehead: “I moved from Darwin over the Christmas break and was disappointed I didn't join the tri club earlier in the 5 years we lived there! Husband and I have quit our jobs and packed up the house to head off and see the world, so I'll keep up training and slot into races when I can! It was a great club for a newbie to be part of; I'm addicted now and will definitely keep it up.

I missed the last tri for 2011 so didn't get a chance to come and say goodbye and thanks, but thank you to everyone for being so welcoming, especially the encouragement along the runs, and for my efforts on the mountain bike against all those road bikes!”

OTHER NEWS:

1. If you click on the link you will be directed to a Parks and Wildlife page which has a survey (under the second photo down ). It has been suggested that we get as many of our Tri Club as possible to fill it out with a request for a better shoulder on Lee Point road or even a separate cycle path away from the road. It doesn’t hurt to dream. http://www.nretas.nt.gov.au/national-parks-and-reserves/parks/find/casuarina The survey itself doesn’t take long.

2. The Court of Arbitration for Sport has dismissed the appeal by British triathlete Harry Wiltshire to overturn his 6-month suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct. You will remember that Harry did a bit of blocking to the advantage of the Brownlee boys (as if they needed it).

3. Rob Weatherald raced in Adelaide last weekend. Rob says the wind was so strong, they were averaging 60 kph at one stage.

4. The annual Santos Tour Down Under kicks off in SA from 15 January.

5. It appears some spring cleaning may have been happening over the holiday period. Check out the for sale / wanted section for some great bargains.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… you are disappointed if your favourite run cap is in the wash
… you are eagerly looking forward to finding out who will get the remaining Olympic tri spots for Oz
… you think an Ironman is easier than a marathon ‘cause you don’t have to start off by running fast

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn

SO YOU WANT TO HELP OUT:

1. We have a fantastic volunteer culture amongst our club members but for some of our newer members it can be all a bit of a mystery so the following may get you started.

Body Marking for Beginners:

1. Here are some simple instructions for those assisting with writing numbers on competitors at events

2. Numbers should be written on both arms (this allows timekeepers to move to different positions and still have a clear view of competitors)

3. Numbers are always written down the side of the arms. eg 1 5 3 would appear as:

1

5

3

4. There are years of experience behind this instruction - it is easier for timekeepers to read a number going down an arm than around it, especially as competitors dash past.

5. Numbers should always be in plain block print. NO FANCY WRITING please. eg a crossed seven can be confused with a four (4) or if smudged, can be mistaken for a nine. A flowery 3 or 5 can be confused as an 8.

6. Pens don’t work well on sweaty bodies or when athletes have applied sunscreen. We keep a roll of kitchen paper in the race box to wipe down arms.

7. There are usually spare waterproof black marker pens in the race box.

8. Now you know body marking basics, please feel free to grab a marker pen at the next event & help at registration for awhile.

9. Competitors can also assist by not applying sunscreen or insect repellent prior to being body marked and if you are of the hot, sweaty, hairy arm & leg variety, bring a towel to wipe down before presenting your appendage to be marked.

TRIATHLON NT NEWS:

1. Triathlon NT welcomes Belinda Birk to the position of EO. Belinda commenced her part time position on 1 Jan 2012.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Nathan Dwyer is thinking life is pretty good after he ran into a car that did a u-turn in front of him on East Point Road, just before Xmas. We hope it’s not too long before he is fully recovered. Nathan may be still somewhat sore and sorry but good news is the bike is ok !

2. A timely reminder to watch your valuables if swimming at Lake Alexander. John Thyne went for a swim around Christmas and left his keys, a singlet and pair of shoes on the grass at the end of the lake. When he got back it had all been stolen. There were quite a few people hanging around but no one saw anything.

3. The road to Mandorah has been given a bit of a flogging of late with a number of members taking the opportunity of extra holiday time on their hands to ride from Darwin to the pub and/or the pub to Darwin.

4. We need only one new member to join to tick over 300 members for 2011/2012.

5. More car/bike togetherness: New Zealand pro Kieran Doe missed the Port of Tauranga Half after being hit by a car on Wednesday sustaining a fractured wrist, a "beat up shoulder", tendon damage in his hands and he was concussed. But wait there’s more, this isn’t the first time it’s happened. NZ drivers must be shockers, as Doe has been hit six times by motorists, resulting in five concussions and many other injuries.

6. Swim and run squads are now all back to normal.

7. Uniform order – need a new tri suit or training gear? A club order will be done shortly … watch your inbox for more details.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN …

… you used Christmas/New Year as an opportunity to ramp up your run (bike/swim) kilometres

… you were upset that the pool was closed on New Years Day

… you finally got to finish Macca’s book

Safe Training,

Cheers,

Robyn
