Photo: Kids in action

Hi All,

Club members were out in force yesterday to assist with the Triathlon NT/DTC Junior Come and Try Day.

After a slow trickle of early entries the kids come out in droves. I love watching them as they are so enthusiastic. There were some pretty tri savvy juniors in amongst them and their transitions put some of our adult members to shame.

As always these things don't just happen. Our thanks to RD Jack Pennington and all the volunteers for their efforts yesterday. I think the tri experience, especially for the first time juniors, was a positive one and there were a lot of very happy kids and proud parents giving that feedback.

The event was made possible via a grant secured from the Community Benefits Fund and a similar event will be held in Alice Springs. Our thanks also to Darwin Airport Corporation for their sponsorship of race bags and drink bottles for participants.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Media Hound: With the wrap up of Finlay's NT Long Course Triathlon happening & then being out of town for a few days, I missed pointing you in the right direction for some interesting media. Heath Porter in Tony Abbott's made the front page of the NT News (now that's going to take some beating) http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2010/08/12/171421_ntnews.html Note the pic in the online article is not the one which appeared on the front cover.

Bec Thyne was picked as Long Course favourite: http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2010/08/13/171731_ntsport.html and most recently a very muddy Toby Barnes was hot favourite for yesterday's B2B: http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2010/08/21/173561_ntsport.html

Also in there somewhere was a post LC article and lead in to the Junior Come and Try Day. Nikki Roddie's photo also appeared in an article on trauma staff. Big week with members in the news.

2. The story on Heath's dislike for the waterfront lagoon sucker fish also made interstate capital newspapers and he was interviewed by phone for the 7pm Project: http://7pmproject.com.au/3175.htm

3. Friday Track is BACK - Lee would like to advise that Friday track has recommenced at the new venue at Alawa oval. To get to the track, drive along Lakeside Drive towards the university, turn left into the Uni Gym carpark then immediate left again which will take you around to the carpark. Toilet facilities are available at the venue but bring plenty of water. Any questions call Lee 0437 700 422.

4. Pete Svara was spotted participating in Beach2Bridge .... does that mean a tri comeback is on the cards? For those who know Pete, it is more likely for him to turn up for a duathlon and he normally does all he can to avoid water !!

5. Alice Springs Masters Games duathlon takes place Thurs 14 October and the triathlon Sat 16 October. Don't forget entries close 9 September at www.alicespringsmasters.com.au

6. Ali Fitch is now out of hospital but will be sporting a neck brace for many weeks. Stu & Ali were on a training ride last Wed when Stu came down on the roundabout at Progress Drive and Dick Ward Drive (front wheel punctured). Ali was unable to avoid riding over both Stu and his bike and landed heavily resulting in a trip to hospital by ambulance. We wish Ali a very speedy recovery. I'd suggest that's a nomination for both in this season's bike crash award !

7. It was a tough day of racing in the Philippines 70.3 yesterday with the temperatures and humidity sizzling. Club Champion Grant Preddy secured 2nd in his age group and a Top 10 overall place.

8. Lots of photos now up at http://www.flickr.com/photos/darwintriclub from Finlay's NT Long Course Triathlon and yesterday's Junior Come and Try Day. Thanks to those who have recently provided contributions, much appreciated.

9. More details on club presentation night (10 September) coming shortly. Just make sure you have that date blocked off in your diary.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN ...

... 100km on the bike followed by a run seems an ordinary thing to do on a Saturday morning
... you head interstate and don't give a second glance to the designer label boutiques but dash into any sport shops you see
... you can always find a load of sweaty gear to wash no matter what time of day it is

Safe Training,
Cheers,
Robyn
