Robyn's E News 16 Mar 09

Hi All,

Hope you all managed to get your training done in between the storms over the weekend. Those pesky little dragonflies certainly got it wrong last week.

News that a 1.7m saltie was caught in the Botanical Gardens yesterday is a reminder to keep your eyes open when you are out there training. Imagine running down the path near the fountain and bumping into a strolling croc !

TRIATHLON NT NEWS:

1. Applications for the proposed Level 1 Coach Course (23-24 May 09) close today. Email: shefs@aapt.net.au for application form.

2. Members are encouraged to register early for the Arafura Games Triathlon. Online accreditation (entry) is via http://www.arafuragames.nt.gov.au/ Fill out part 1 and then you are sent a password to re enter the site to fill out event specific details.

3. The NT Olympic Distance Championships are held in conjunction with Arafura. NT athletes will be asked to complete another form for this but the important thing at the moment is to get anyone doing the Arafura Games Triathlon to register online now.

4. Teams can compete in the event but there are no Arafura Games medals awarded ie no Team category via the Arafura system. There will be a team medal for 1st team in the NT OD Champs.

5. To visualise the awards system, think: On the day one official, formal Arafura Games medal presentation in the categories: 16-19 years, 20-24 years and Open (the rest of us) takes place. The Arafura Games is based on developing athletes hence the focus on younger competitors.

The formal part out of the way, the NT OD Champs presentation will then happen. Perpetual trophies for first NT male and female will be given out as well as medals for winners in the various age groups and winning team.

5. None of the above make sense? Ask for more info at our next club event.

Following an absolute deluge of entries in the final week, Port Mac will be welcoming around 1,400 athletes at the start line on Sunday 5 April. Paul Bell, Nikki Roddie, Ian Norton, Phil Brownscombe, Stu Fitch, Rob Brooks & Mick Outhred are all Port Mac bound. Rob is battling a virus at the moment, Mick a bit of a calf, Stu is training the house down and the rest are fitting in what they can, when they can, around tight shift work schedules.

6. Monica Stewart's 2nd place F55-59 in Perth gives her automatic qualifying for ITU Age Group World Triathlon Championships (Gold Coast, September). Kyle Gear was 7th overall in the age group field and 5th in M20-24 and Chad Anderson also made top 10 in his age group (8th) and they should be on the start line in September as well.

7. A Level 1 Sports Trainers Course will be conducted 4-6 April 09. Cost $265 (Students $225). Closing date for application 20 Mar 09. Further information phone 8981 5362 or email: smaeducation@octa4.net.au

8. The new umbrella web site for the Challenge Family www.challenge-family.com and logo heralds a new era for the Challenge triathlon series. This series of ironman and half ironman distance events includes Roth and Wanaka.

9. Our first "real" triathlon in quite awhile takes place this weekend. So give the tri gear a once over and maybe treat the bike to a spring clean. It might also be an idea to make yourself an equipment list to check off to ensure you don't forget something important.
