Robyn's E News 14 July 2010

Hi All,

The Tour de Crash is certainly churning out some casualties this year. Ouch! If you aren't tuning in, you are missing a real roller coaster of rider fortunes.

If you ever wonder why triathlon rules for age group athletes have no drafting allowed, think about it. If pro cyclists racing the TdF find it hard to stay upright at times, the potential is there for absolute carnage if drafting was legal in age group triathlon.

TA rules are in place to promote fairness and safety during our events and the draft zone is there to give you an out if something does happen up ahead of you!

Did you like that subtle plea for no drafting at our event on Sunday?

LEVEL 1 TECHNICAL OFFICIALS COURSE Expressions of Interest:

1. Thanks to those who have already responded.

2. The course scheduled for Friday 23 July 2010 which is Show Day in Darwin.

3. Would you be interested in attending during the day rather than the evening?

4. Please email eo@triathlonnt.com.au with your preferred time on the Friday or phone Phil Blumberg for further info on 0414 852 091

OTHER NEWS:

1. WTC have released the new rules for future qualification for pro athletes for Ironman and 70.3 World Champs. Briefly for Kona, it is now a pointscore basis with best of 5 results counting from IM and 70.3 events (max of 3) with points weighted to IM events. I wonder if the next step, down the track, is to introduce a points system for age groupers to qualify?? Will watch with interest.

2. Challenge Wanaka fees are set to rise at the end of this month.

3. We are hoping for a large turnout at the upcoming Technical Officials Course. We desperately need to increase our pool of available TO's but this is also a fantastic opportunity to learn the rules of our sport. Currently scheduled for Show Day, please email eo@triathlonnt.com.au if you can attend and your preference for a day or evening time slot.

4. Technical Officials can be anyone from our community. Obviously an interest in triathlon is generally required, so if your partner, family member or friends would like to be in the middle of the action while you are competing, let them know about the course and encourage them to attend as well.

5. Entries are coming in for Finlay's 2010 NT Long Course Triathlon at Lake Bennett 15 August 2010. Please enter as early as possible to assist organisers. Entry at www.triathlonnt.com.au Individual Members $20

6. The newly formed Gove Tri Club is now up and running . Triathletes in Gove first contacted Triathlon NT back in 1992 about forming a tri club. This didn't happen but Runners North did affiliate on and off for a couple of seasons. These are exciting times for triathlon in the Territory, with lots of work being done on the junior front in Darwin, Gove and Alice Springs.

7. President John Thyne is now a TA Recognised Practicing Level 1 triathlon coach. Congratulations John.

8. Alice Springs Masters Games triathlon and duathlon happen in October. More info at: www.alicespringsmasters.com.au

9. Our latest tri baby now has a name! Saffron and mum Kylie are doing just fine.

10. Don't forget to pick up a flyer from pools & bike shops and get your kids/friend's kids/neighbours kids/school mates etc entered in the Junior Come and Try Day 22 August 2010.

BLAST FROM THE PAST:

1. Attached is a copy of an NT News race report on the 1989 Olympic Distance event. Mention is made of a 300m wade sorting "the men from the mice". A few familiar names are mentioned. See attached pdf.

2. I've been asked were I get this stuff from. A self confessed triathlon tragic, over the years I've badgered long time members for a look at their treasured results and clipping collections and photocopied much for my own use. I've got a huge collection of tri mags (commercial and club) and I've never let anyone throw out something I think may have historical significance (some day). I've snaffled/rescued many a piece of paper destined for the dump. Doesn't really make for clutter free living ! Hope some of you enjoy our club history as much as I do.

Hope to see you all Sunday,
Cheers,
Robyn
