E News 24 October 2012

Hi All,

The end of the year is hurtling towards us.  There are some who age up next year wishing that time away.  You really have to love a sport that takes some of the pain out of getting older J

Some confusion exists among members about age categories so here’s a quick “How old am I in triathlon? 101”.

For NT Championship events, TA national championships & the majority of triathlons in Australia your age for the current 2012/2013 season is “As at 31 December 2012”.

Your age category appears on your 2012/2013 TA card and you remain in that category until 1 July 2013.

For all club events we historically use 10 year age groups.  This is due to our smaller numbers.

For events run by WTC (i.e. Ironman Australia, Cairns, Melb, WA as well as their 70.3 races) your age is calculated “As at 31 December in year of competition”.

For ITU World Championship events age is also calculated “As at 31 December in year of competition”.

For example: your birthday is coming up 14 February next year & you are turning 30 so:

Your club age category remains 20-29 until 30 June 2013
If you race Mooloolaba in March your age category will be 25-29
If you compete in Ironman Melbourne in March your age category will be 30-34
If you compete in the age group category at the ITU World Triathlon Series at Yokohama Japan in May your age category will be 30-34
If you compete in the Arafura Games Triathlon in May your age category will be 25-29

Bottom line, read the fine print to ensure you enter in correct category.  Hope that helps.
