Robyn's E News 15 Sept 08

Hi All,

Race 1 of the K9 Cycles Women's & Sprint Series was held at Lake Alexander yesterday. Many thanks to Brian Gallagher (RD for the day) and those volunteers who assisted with the running of the event. Close to 60 participants competed over both distances which was a great turnout. The time shift for the series will also help those athletes targetting events such as Noosa and/or the early selection events for Worlds.

On Friday night the presentation dinner bought out some interesting characters - Kenny the Plumber was there, so to Lara Croft, Brian, James Dean, a couple of Gladiators, a couple of Bollywood stars and an assortment of other colourful characters. Thanks to Belinda Townend & co for arranging the night.

OTHER NEWS:

1. Bicycle NT ’s annual general meeting (AGM) is on Sunday 12 October 2008, 9.00 am sharp to 10.30 am, at the Nightcliff Electorate Meeting Room, Shop 5, Pavonia Way, Nightcliff (ie Jane Aagard’s office, where the Sunday Nightcliff markets are held).

2. Earlier this month the International Triathlon Union (ITU) announced it has imposed a two-year ban on Dmitriy Gaag (former world champ), a triathlete from Kazakhstan, after committing an anti-doping rule violation in an out-of-competition doping control test in Des Moines, United States on June 20, 2008.

The ban begins June 20, 2008 and prohibits Gaag from entering or participating in any competition or activity authorized by ITU, its National Federations (NFs) and/or any other signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code.

Gaag's anti-doping rule violation was a result of an adverse analytical finding of recombinant erythropoietin (EPO), a substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.

3. There were some interesting characters at our Annual Presentation Night dinner on Friday. The paparazzi took a lot of photos (they are currently under review & the best will be kept for blackmailing purposes lol) and photos will be posted to flickr sometime soon.

4. The second National Ride to Work Day is happening again on Wednesday 15 October. Free community breakfasts are taking place around the NT. In Darwin, free coffee and Bakers Delights yummies will be served at the Roma Bar for registered participants from 7.00 to 8.30.
If you would like to participate this year, go to the ride to work website at www.ride2work.com.au . Check out the “community breakfasts around Australia” tab on the website to find out about the breakfasts that are taking place in the NT. Last year, about 400 people in the NT registered and participated in the ride, and organisers want more to participate this year.

5. For the latest info on all the races in Kununurra and top end Western Australia log on to Triathlon Kimberley.

6. Ian Norton & Nikki Roddie made it back from Ireland in time for the presentation night. At the Lost Sheep Triathlon Ian was 9th overall and Nikki 9th female in this extremely difficult race. This is a very popular event with a limited field and they had to be on the ball to secure entry which sells out almost as soon as it opens.

7. Thanks to those supporters who yesterday helped clear up sections of glass on the bike turnaround. Much appreciated by competitors.

8. Triathlon becoming the sport of choice for celebrities - latest Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey at Malibu Triathlon.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE WHEN...

... waking up at 5am to exercise seems the natural thing to do
... you go from shop to shop desperately trying to find your favourite running shoes to replace your worn out pair
... you wish shoe manufacturers would stop fiddling with the design of the one pair of shoes that used to fit you perfectly and be comfortable enough to run in.

Train safe,
Cheers
Robyn
